A hernia is a tear in the tissue or muscle which causes an abnormal bulging of an organ, usually in the abdominal region or groin. The problem can occur in any part of the body where there is an incision, and cause various complexities. There are several types of hernia, some of the most common ones are inguinal hernia, femoral, ventral, incisional, umbilical, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and many more. The severity of this problem depends on the location of the tear. While the problem does not usually involve pain, but one can often experience slight pain and discomfort. While most of the types of Hernia are not dangerous, particularly Hiatal Hernia can be dangerous, where the upper part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm muscle into the chest cavity, resulting in trouble standing up or bending down, heartburn, chest pain, and abdominal discomfort.

A hernia usually does not have any particular symptoms and can show up during a routine health check-up. The known symptoms can be bulging body parts, abdominal pain, groin discomfort, fatigue, tenderness, unusual swelling, etc.

In the majority of scenarios, there exists no concrete reason for the development of Hernia in a person. The hernia is frequently spotted in particular individual strata of the society, such as in older individuals, females, and children born with a congenital hernia.

The problem can be caused by a combination of weakened muscles and repeated abdominal and groin strains. Some of the factors which are capable of exerting pressure on the abdominal wall, thus increasing risk of hernia are as below:

  • Persistent Cough
  • Enlarged Prostate
  • Lifting heavy Items
  • Obesity
  • Undescended Testicles
  • Straining on the Toilet
  • Smoking
  • Straining to urinate
  • Abdominal fluid
  • Poor Nutrition
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Peritoneal Dialysis

Watchful waiting doesn’t work in the case of hernia. Untreated hernias become painful over time and may sprout additional complications such as incarceration or strangulation. Hernias do not get better with time and require surgical remedy. There are two courses in conducting the surgery, i.e., Open surgery and Laparoscopic surgery. A surgeon after analyzing the exact type of the hernia makes a treatment plan that best suits the patient’s body and is capable of easing the symptoms. Hernia Treatment procedure is a fairly simple process and does not require an excessive amount of time to get treated. Surgeries are often accompanied by drugs that are prescribed by the attending surgeons to reduce the symptoms and comfort the patient.

Variables such as, genetic history, chronic cough, pregnancy, or having low birth weight mere existence makes a person prone to hernia. Many of these variables are beyond the control of a person. Nonetheless, an individual vulnerable to hernia can adopt preventative measures to reduce the strain on abdominal muscles, thereby reducing the chances of developing a hernia. In order to prevent this problem, one must cease tobacco consumption, avoid lifting of heavy objects, consume food rich in fiber, and keep regular tabs on weight. These measures are easy to practice and save a person the cost of Hernia Treatment.
